This is a guide on how to change the engine coolant on a Nissan 350Z.
Tools Needed
- 10 mm socket ratchet
- Phillips screwdriver
- Jack stands and jack
- Drain bucket
- Thick towel
- Funnel
Supplies Needed
Instructions
- Wait for the engine to cool before starting to avoid getting scalded by hot coolant.
- Jack up the car and place on jack stands.
- Go under the front of the car, and using the 10mm socket, remove the screws holding the under body splash guard in place. Remove the screws all along the edge of the shield, and remove the black pop-rivets in the middle.
Draining the Coolant
- Pop the hood of the car and setup hood prop.
- Wrap the thick towel around the radiator cap and carefully remove cap. First, turn the cap a quarter of a turn to release built-up pressure. Then turn cap all the way.
- Find the radiator drain plus and place the drain bucket directly beneath it.
- Open radiator drain plug at the bottom of the radiator, and then remove radiator cap. Let all the coolant drain.
- Remove reservoir tank as necessary, drain engine coolant and clean tank before installing.
- Check drained engine cool for contaminants such as rust, corrosion or discoloration. If contaminated, flush the engine cooling system.
Flushing Cooling System
- Install reservoir tank, and radiator drain plug.
- Remove air relief plug on heater hose.
- Fill radiator with water until water spills from the air relief hole, then close air relief plug. Fill radiator and reservoir tank with water and reinstall radiator cap.
- Run engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
- Rev engine two or three times under no-load.
- Stop engine and wait until it cools down.
- Drain water from the system.
- Repeat steps 1 through 7 until clear water begins to drain from radiator.
Refilling Engine Coolant
- Install reservoir tank, and radiator drain plug.
- Make sure that each hose clamp has been firmly tightened.
- Remove air relief plug on heater hose.
- Fill radiator and reservoir tank to specified level. Pour engine coolant through engine coolant filler neck slowly of less than 2 quarts a minute to allow air in system to escape.
- When engine coolant overflows air relief hole on heater hose, install air relief plug with new O-ring.
- Install radiator cap.
- Warm up the car until opening thermostat. Standard for warming-up time is approximately 10 minutes at 3,000 rpm. Make sure thermostat condition by touching radiator hose (lower) to see flow of warm water. Watch water temperature gauge so as not to overheat engine.
- Stop engine and cool down to less than approximately 50°C (122°F). Cool down using fan to reduce the time.
- If necessary, refill radiator up to filler neck with engine coolant.
- Refill reservoir tank to “MAX” level line with engine coolant.
- Repeat steps 4 through 8 two or more times with radiator cap installed until engine coolant level no longer drops.
- Check cooling system for leaks with engine running.
- Warm up engine, and check for sound of engine coolant flow while running engine from idle up to 3,000 rpm with heater temperature controller set at several position between “COOL” and “WARM”. Sound may be noticeable at heater unit.
- If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating step 4 through 8 until engine coolant level no longer drops.
